1996 Honda Civic EX Sedan Oil Change DIY Instructions:

Step 1: Put on a pair of rubber gloves. Start your 1996 Honda Civic EX Sedan and warm up your engine until the needle on the temperature gauge in your instrument cluster is approximately half way between the C (cold) and H (hot) readings.

Step 2: Place your car ramps in front of the front tires on your 1996 Honda Civic EX Sedan and slowly drive the front end of your vehicle up the ramps. Please careful not to overshoot the top of the car ramps. Set your emergency brake and shut off the car.

Step 3: Remove the oil filler cap from the top of your engine.

Step 4: Place your oil drain pan under the oil drain plug. The oil drain bolt is located on the bottom on the engine between the driver side wheel and the car exhaust.

Step 5: Use your 1/2″ drive torque wrench and 17 mm socket to remove the oil drain bolt by turning it counter clockwise. Allow the used oil to fully drain into your oil drain pan. Hot engine oil can burn you so remove the oil drain bolt slowly and carefully.

Step 6: Place your oil drain pan under your oil filter. The oil filter is located above the oil drain bolt near the driver side axle on the engine block.

Step 7: Use your oil filter wrench to loosen the oil filter from the engine by turning it counter clockwise. Loosen the oil filter just enough so that you can turn it using your hand.

Step 8: Slowly unscrew the oil filter just until residual oil starts to drain from the oil filter location. Allow the residual oil to fully drain into your oil drain pan.

Step 9: Remove the oil filter from the engine by unscrewing it counter clockwise by hand. The moment the oil filter is removed from the engine, tilt the open end upward to prevent any spillage from used oil that may still be inside the oil filter. Wipe down the engine and oil filter location using your shop towels.

Step 10: Using your hand, screw your oil drain bolt back into your engine oil pan until it stops. Tighten it to 29 ft-lbs or torque using your 1/2″ drive torque wrench.

Step 11: Open a bottle of new engine oil. Lubricate the rubber gasket of your new oil filter using some of your new 5W-30 motor oil.

Step 12: Using your hand, screw on the new oil filter onto your engine until it stops. Tighten the oil filter an extra 7/8 turn using your oil filter wrench.

Step 13: Place your funnel into the oil filler hole on the top of your engine.

Step 14: Pour in 3.5 quarts of new 5W-30 motor oil and screw in your oil filler cap.
